Toto Wolff sets record straight on Max Verstappen rumours as Red Bull face anxious wait | F1 | Sport

Toto Wolff has dismissed speculation that Mercedes are set to meet with Max Verstappen at this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix. The Silver Arrows are thought to be weighing up an ambitious move for Verstappen, who continues to be linked with a surprise Red Bull exit.

The internal politics at Red Bull this season have cast fresh doubt over Verstappen’s long-term future with the reigning champions. He remains tied down until the end of 2028 but it has been reported that he could seek an early exit if Red Bull fail to get their house in order.

It was suggested earlier this week that a meeting between Mercedes and Verstappen had been pencilled in for the Miami Grand Prix weekend. Wolff, however, was quick to dismiss those claims as nothing more than speculation when asked by Reuters on Monday.

“No, that’s one of the rumours,” said the Mercedes boss. “People make up meetings, make up what’s happening with the drivers but these things should be behind closed doors and everything that’s been out there was not really the right thing.”

Wolff has made no secret of his desire to bring Verstappen to Mercedes when Lewis Hamilton leaves to join Ferrari next year. The Dutchman is on course to seal his fourth straight Drivers’ Championship title in spite of the internal divisions at Red Bull, winning four out of five races in 2024.

The ongoing turmoil at Red Bull has stemmed from Christian Horner being accused of inappropriate behaviour by a female employee at the start of the season. The 50-year-old was later cleared of any wrongdoing but his accuser has since challenged the result of the investigation by submitting an appeal.

The situation has also led to Adrian Newey wanting to leave Red Bull, with the design guru having reportedly informed the team that he wants to depart before the end of his contract in 2026. He has already been linked with several teams but Wolff remained coy when asked if Mercedes will consider making a move for his services.

“Adrian Newey is an iconic engineer in Formula One with a great track record and again, there are so many people talking about what he eventually might do and whether he leaves Red Bull or not,” added Wolff. “I’m just looking at it like a fan and watching that space.”
